Sublingual immunotherapy, or SLIT, is a method of treating allergies and asthma. SLIT is an alternative to allergy shots that allows patients to administer small doses of the allergen they are allergic to in the form of allergy drops. The allergen content of the drops gradually increases over time to help stimulate the immune system without causing an allergic reaction. SLIT helps to reeducate the immune system by treating the underlying cause of your allergy or asthma symptoms to ensure that you do not overreact to allergens due to natural exposure.
SLIT is a helpful way of treating patients with certain allergies like hay fever, watery or itchy eyes, chronic cough, chronic sinus infections, and asthma.Patients undergoing SLIT can take most doses at home, reducing the number of in-office visits without disrupting their everyday activities. SLIT is a safe way of lessening your allergy symptoms and may help reduce your dependence on allergy medications over time.
